A Swedish site about icy roads. Most of it is in Swedish; this page explains what you will find and how to read it.

Halk-Index: the ice risk where you are

For each of Sweden’s 290 municipalities (kommuner) we work out a Halk-Index: a number from 0 to 100 for how much in the weather points to ice on the road right now. It is recalculated every half hour, for the largest town in the municipality.

  • 0–30 Låg (low): little in the weather points to ice.
  • 31–60 Förhöjd (elevated): ice is possible, especially on bridges and in shade.
  • 61–100 Hög (high): several signs of ice at once.

It combines the forecasts from SMHI (the Swedish weather service) and MET Norway (behind yr.no), the road temperature from the nearest Trafikverket road-weather station within 20 km where there is one, and Trafikverket’s own road-condition reports for roads within 25 km.

Find your municipality on the list of all municipalities (in Swedish). Each page shows the index, the forecast hour by hour, what the nearest station measures, traffic cameras and current incidents.

What it is not

Halk-Index is our own estimate, not an official warning and not a measurement of grip on the road where you drive. A low number does not mean the road is safe. Official weather warnings come from SMHI (in Swedish), and road conditions and incidents from Trafikverket. In an emergency, call 112.

How the index is calculated, rule by rule, is set out on the method page (Så räknas Halk-Index, in Swedish).
